Gorges
For those who love hiking, climbing and exploring there are 62 gorges. The most famous of which are the following:
The Samaria gorge has a length of 16 km. Starting from the location ‘Ksiloskalo’ (4 km far from village of Omalos) ends at the village Agia Roumeli. For those who wish to visit it, the gorge is open from 1st of May to 31st of October. Following the footpath you have the chance to admire a variety of interesting sights along the gorge. Ancient remains, caves, churches, a deserted village of bee masters, spring waters and the wild nature compose a unique landscape of extreme beauty.
The gorge of Agia Eirini, a 3 hrs descend (7 km) from Agia Eirini (42 km from Chania) to Sougia. It has a luxuriant vegetation and a kiosk.
Impros gorge (57 km from Chania)is located at the plateau of Sfakia. With ‘narrow doors’ and beautiful flora. Its length is at about 6km and it takes 3 hours to cross it.
Therissos gorge (Venizelou), It’s located 7 km far from Chania at the road to Therisso. It can be easily crossed by car and it is supposed to be a miniature of Samaria gorge.
Aradaina Gorge, from Anopolis to Marmara beach.It takes 3 hrs from Anopoli and 1hr 15 min from Marmara to Loutro. It’s on the east side of Samaria gorge.
Caves
The natural beauty is enhanced with a number of caves which are ready to be explored. At the prefecture of Chania there are more than 700 caves some of which are important because of their archaeological meaning while others are related with different myths and legends that somebody can read in books or listen to from native people. At Apokoronas (Samonas, Kournas, Kokkino Chorio, Melidoni), St. Ioannis’s and Arkoudospilias’s ( Gouverneto, Akrotiri) Koumarospilias’s and the cave of Azogire are just some of the most noticeable caves in Chania.
Beaches-Lakes
At the prefecture of Chania one can find a huge variety of beaches for every sense. For those who are looking for beaches of extreme beauty is necessary to visit the west side of the prefecture. Beaches like Falaserna, Sfinari, Ormos Stomiou, Chrisoskalitissa and the gorgeous Elafonisi are just some of the most famous ones of the island. While moving at the east side towards Chania town we meet the busy and well organized beaches of Kissamos, Maleme, Gerani, Platanias and Agia Marina. On our road to Rethimno we must not omit the opportunity to visit Akrotiri or to drive to Georgioupoli. With a small by-pass from the central road to Rethimno we can visit the lake of Kournas, a graphic lake with important quantity of fishes and eels.
