It is also very easy for somebody to visit near-by beaches (5-10 minutes by car), caves, gorges, traditional villages and archaeological sites.
The strategic position of the village (close to the national road) offers the ability to the visitor to get at both the West and the East site of the island.
Local festivals and entertainment
The visitor of Chania has every opportunity to take part in social occasions throughout the year: from the solemn religious celebrations and the traditional festivals in honour of patron saints to the stately commemorations of national anniversaries such as the 28th of October, the 25th of March. It is not only under these circumstances that the Cretan honours and entertains however. Many agricultural activities like the production of tsikoudia - the "rakokazano" (copper cauldron for distilling raki), the harvesting and treading of the grapes, the harvesting of the olives and the oranges, are all an opportunity for a celebration in the eyes of the Cretan. Impressive are the ceremonies which surround engagements, weddings and baptisms which are often open events where a bountiful amount of food and drink are served and are always accompanied by live traditional music, dancing and a hospitable mood. Throughout the summer days nonstop amusement is offered on the seashores of the prefecture. For those who love horse riding there are equestrian centers which can be found in Dere, Akrotiri and Georgioupoli. Nightlife reaches its climax at the charming Venetian port of Chania and cosmopolitan Platanias where you can find a plethora of bars and nightclubs.
